Common questions
Where is my journal stored? Can you read it?
On your device, encrypted with a key only your devices hold. We can't read it — there's no server we run and no account with us. If you turn on sync, it travels through your own iCloud as encrypted data Apple can't read either. The full picture is in our Privacy Policy.
How do I back up or move to a new phone?
Two ways, both in Settings → Backup & sync → Backup and Restore:
turn on iCloud sync so your journal restores automatically on a new device, and/or
Export a copy — a single .alcovebackup file that restores
everything (optionally password-protected). Keep that file somewhere safe; because
only you hold the key, it's your lifeline if you ever lose the device.
I restored on a new device but it looks empty.
Your encryption key roams through iCloud Keychain, which can take a moment to
arrive on a fresh device. Give it a minute on Wi-Fi, or restore from a
.alcovebackup export, which carries the key inside the file.
How do I get my data out?
Settings → Backup & sync → Backup and Restore → Export a copy gives you a plain, readable JSON of everything you've kept — yours to take anywhere, any time.
Is the AI sending my entries somewhere?
No. Every word the assistant writes is generated by Apple's on-device model, and dictation uses on-device speech recognition only. Your entries are never sent to any server to be understood — see Privacy for specifics.
How do purchases and the free trial work?
Alcove is free to start with a short trial, then a one-time unlock through the App Store — no subscription. Purchases and refunds are handled by Apple; we never see your payment details. Restore a purchase from within the app or via the App Store's “Restore Purchases.”
